Closed Captions on In Theatre Movies

The title of this blog explains it all. Having read the review of Spiderman by Loquacious Lennie I had to try this closed caption thingie. We never mention individual theatres on this site but I will make an exception in this case because the manager was very accomodating and explained the system to me. It was The Bridge in Los Angeles(nice bar too) and the system is in use in theatre #16. The closed captions are not integral to the movie but are on a very precise auxillary system. It's the one normally showing the current blockbuster, in this case Spiderman. You get a weird looking perspex or some piece about 12"X4"(I didn't have a tape with me so I could be out a bit) attached to a flexible tube with a fitting that sits in the cupholder. The captions are displayed under the projection booth in reverse so you need this adapter to view the mirror image. I set it up to sit just under the movie and not in the screen like on a tv system. After experimenting with different positions my companion chose to look through the perspex at the screen. It is all about personel preference. It works like a charm. It would make an otherwise jumbled sound track understandable for the hard of hearing. This particular theatre also has headphones you can use to amplify the sound track. If you think you look weird in a movie theatre wearing headphones, wait until you see the looks you get when you set up what looks like a sneeze guard for your popcorn. But as always the proof is in the pudding and this system is a piece of cake to use and would enhance any movie for the hard of hearing.
